3D Robotics was formed by two names Chris Anderson and Jordy Munoz. They hand-assembled their initial UAV kits and then shipped them in pizza boxes. However, by 2012, 3DR's clientele had expanded far beyond the DIY movement. Chris left Wired to join Jordi as the new CEO of 3DR. 3DR's global community of volunteers quickly developed APM, a world-class universal flight code. This code was utilized by 3DR to create the Pixhawk, which is still the world's premier open autopilot platform. This platform now powers systems for some of the world’s most successful UAV companies and research institutes, including NASA, and has been adopted by a slew of other businesses that are revolutionizing agriculture, real estate, construction, search and rescue, conservation, and a slew of other human endeavors.
