The 1968 U.S. presidential elections on board the SS were replicated by AFS members. After spending a year in the US in July 1968 Waterman is returning to Europe. The AFS Intercultural Services is a non-profit, charitable, multinational and non-governmental organization that offers intercultural learning to help people develop the awareness, skills and empathy required to construct a society that is fairer and calmer. In a ground-breaking dialogue on global competence in Budapest, Hungary, the first ever AFS Global Conference has taken together 450+ participants from 70 nations. This and the succeeding annual AFS Global Conferences create an ambitious roadmap aimed at making global skills education a worldwide right for everyone. Working in teams of volunteers who vary in age and experience is an excellent way for learning teamwork skills which are considered 'people's skills' by AFS Iceland's Marín that are coordination, team work, empathy, listening.
