The Alaska Railroad is a Class II railroad that runs from Seward and Whittier in the United States state of Alaska's south to Fairbanks, and then on to Eielson Air Force Base and Fort Wainwright in the state's interior. It once reached all the way to the banks of the Yukon River, northeast of Fairbanks. It is unique in the United States in that it transports both freight and passengers within its system, including Denali National Park. The railroads mainline is over 656 miles (1,056 kilometres) long, with branch lines and siding tracks totalling just over 500 miles (800 kilometres).
