Albuquerque Public Schools was established in the year 1879 as Albuquerque Academy, which was later renamed as Albuquerque High — the oldest school — in the year 1891. The Albuquerque, New Mexico-headquartered public school is one of the pioneers of New Mexico’s 89 school districts, which is serving about a fourth of the state’s public school students in 144 schools scattered across 1,200 square miles. With nearly 82,000 students, the APS schools are categorized into Elementary, Middle, K-8, High School, and Charter School categories. Approximately 10,000 students in the metropolitan area attend APS-authorized charter schools.
