Headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, The American College of Surgeons (ACS) is an educational institute comprising an association of surgeons. I was founded in 1912 by a military surgeon Frederic Atwood Besley. ACS is responsible for issuing membership for doctors worldwide specializing in surgery who pass a set of rigorous qualifications. ACS is dedicated to improving the care of surgical patients and to continuation standards of care through an ethical practice environment. ACS recognizes fourteen surgical specialties: cardiothoracic surgery, general surgery, gynecology and obstetrics, gynecologic oncology, colon, and rectal surgery, neurological surgery, ophthalmic surgery, and 7 others. The college welcomes relevant experienced and qualifying individuals to join at junior as well as senior positions.
