American Girl had interesting start. Pleasant Rowland, a writer and retired teacher from Chicago, had a wonderful idea in 1986, and the narrative of American Girl began. After visiting Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia, Pleasant was inspired to develop instructional dolls with historical backstories. American Girl, formerly known as Pleasant Company, began by mailing out catalogues until 1996, when it launched the first retail shop in Chicago. Mattel bought Pleasant Company in 1998 and rebranded it American Girl in 2003. American Girl provides an inspiring universe of dolls, stories, and experiences that nourish a girl's spirit while also helping her develop character strength. Mattel, Inc. is the parent company of American Girl.
