Argonne National Laboratory is a national laboratory for scientific and engineering research run by UChicago Argonne LLC for the US Department of Energy. The institution is located in Lemont, Illinois, just outside of Chicago, and is the Midwest's largest national laboratory in terms of size and breadth. Argonne began as the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory, which was established in part to carry out Enrico Fermi's work on nuclear reactors for the Manhattan Project during WWII. In the postwar era, the lab largely concentrated on non-weapon related nuclear physics, developing and building the first power-producing nuclear reactors, assisting in the construction of reactors used by the United States' nuclear fleet, and several other projects. Argonne has collaborated with over 600 enterprises, as well as various federal agencies and other organisations. Argonne's purpose is to produce new research and innovations by combining a unique combination of world-class science, engineering, and user facilities.
