Arkansas Conference of the United Methodist Church oversees around 650 United Methodist churches and ministries in Arkansas, as well as 380 clergies, to 'create disciples of Jesus Christ, who make disciples equipped and sent to alter lives, communities, and the world.” Bishop Gary E. Mueller, who was appointed to Arkansas in 2012, is the leader of the Conference, which is divided into five districts (Central, Northwest, Northeast, Southeast, and Southwest), each with its own Chief Mission Strategist. Six separate Annual Conferences have served Arkansas over the past 200 years: the Arkansas, Little Rock, North Arkansas, Southwest, Ouachita, and White River Conferences. In Batesville, the Methodist Episcopal Church (a forerunner of the United Methodist Church) organized the first 'Arkansas Conference' in 1836. The upper two-thirds of Louisiana, as well as the Indian Territory, were included in the Conference.
