Description: Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs Campus Recreation University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Campus Recreation provides a welcoming environment that inspires the university community to engage in recreation and wellness opportunities. With approximately 500,000 square feet of state-of-the-art indoor recreation space, 75 acres of outdoor fields, and a diverse variety of fitness, wellness, and recreational programs, there are many opportunities for students to stay active. PRIMARY POSITION FUNCTION/SUMMARY: The Assistant Director of Competitive Sports and Community Programs provides strategic direction, operations and overall management of Competitive Sports and Community Programs for Campus Recreation. The position is responsible for all aspects of these programs related to program development, policies and procedures, and supervision of full time staff. This position is also responsible for the implementation, promotion, direction and supervision of the Intramural Sports program and assisting with oversight of Club Sports and Community Programs on behalf of Campus Recreation. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Competitive Sports & Community Programs Duties & Responsibilities Programmatic: Organize, plan, conduct, and evaluate Competitive Sports and Community Programs; make program updates based on current research; conduct quality improvement projects and needs assessment of areas. Structure a cohesive and organized intramural program and work cooperatively with the Graduate Assistant for Intramurals in directing all related aspects, and serve as the main back-up for the unit. Weekend and evening hours will be required. Evaluate all aspects of Competitive Sports and Community Programs and make recommendations to the Associate Director of Programs regarding additions, deletions and improvements to intramural sport offerings. Develop internal and external marketing and promotion efforts focused on Competitive Sports and Community Programs and events; in conjunction with the marketing department, implement these efforts which may include print information, website design, social media outreach, and publicizing area achievements. Identify potential risks associated with competitive sports and community programs and maintain standards to ensure a safe environment for patrons, including communication with the Superintendent of Grounds and department risk management contact. Advise the Illinois Student Official s Association. Competitive Sports & Community Programs Duties & Responsibilities Staffing: Supervise Club Sports & Community Programs Coordinator and Graduate Assistant for Intramural Activities. Hire, train, supervise and evaluate all intramural staff, Program Assistants, Officials, and additional hourly personnel. Determine staffing needs and hire qualified candidates based upon certifications, experience, skills and ability to contribute to the diverse needs of the University of Illinois and Campus Recreation. Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate part-time employees that oversee intramural events. Ensure that employees are well-versed in Campus Recreation policies and procedures. Evaluate personnel via random shift audits and observations from professional and leadership staff. Prioritize tasks and assign/delegate duties to part-time employees in all pre- and post- preparation associated with the events. Supervise and assist in the development of student staff and sport officials via the Intramurals Program. Provide direct supervision to the Graduate Assistant for Intramurals including support, direction with coordination of participating teams and recommendations for enhancement. Compile information and data in conjunction with monthly, mid-year and yearly reports. Including, but not limited to, Federal Work Study information and diverse student hires. Department Duties & Responsibilities: Secure, maintain, and inventory associated equipment and supplies in conjunction with the Campus Recreation Business Office. Recommend necessary equipment and supply purchases as needed. Develop policies and procedures related to the evaluation of unit facilities and equipment. Efficiently and effectively communicate with the Events Department regarding all external groups renting field/court space and assist Coordinator of Club Sports and Community Programs in ensuring all protection of minors, facility usage, and contracts expectations are met. Develop replacement and preventative maintenance plans for all equipment and supplies. Track and compile information and data in conjunction with monthly, mid-year and yearly reports. Utilize information to develop policies, procedures, and strategic goals for Aquatics and Risk Management for Campus Recreation. Review, in conjunction with the supervising Associate Director for Financial Operations, matters relating to fees, supervision, budget, and fiscal and programmatic responsibilities. Work cooperatively with other Campus Recreation program areas when needed, including the development of collaborative programming. Participate as a member of the Campus Recreation professional staff in the development and implementation of policies and procedures. Participate in the development of programs, departmental objectives and long-range planning, by preforming research, providing recommendations and implementing plans as appropriate. Review and make recommendations and updates on all written policies and procedures affecting Campus Recreation. Responsible for documenting facility usage information. Serve on Division, Department, and/or University committees as assigned. Design and implement special projects that support the overall mission of Campus Recreation. Assist with night and weekend coverage as needed. QUALIFICATIONS: Required : Master s degree in Recreation, Sports, Facility Management or closely related field. Three years of college or university-level work experience that includes responsibility supervising and staffing Competitive Sports Programs. Preferred : Experience with scheduling software. Experience with payroll software and payroll submission for hourly employees. Experience with community programs and outreach. Prior experience with and strong commitment to diversity and developing a comprehensive understanding of the needs of diverse student and user groups Certification in State high school officiating CPR certified Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Comprehensive and detailed knowledge of competitive sports programs. Comprehension of budgetary requirements associated with intramurals programming. Ability to determine the safety needs of the Competitive Sports and Community programs and make sound field judgements to ensure a reasonable level of safety is achieved. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet project review deadlines. Strong written and verbal skills and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, faculty, staff, students, and community patrons.
