The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), the national not-for-profit association established in 1863 & representing over 93,000 veterinarians working in private and corporate practice, government, industry, academia, and uniformed services, is seeking an Assistant Editor to join our Publications team to work with the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (JAVMA) and the American Journal of Veterinary Research (AJVR) located in our Headquarters office in Schaumburg, IL, a northwest suburb of Chicago.

Reporting to the Deputy Editor, the Assistant Editor will be responsible for coordinating peer review of manuscripts submitted to the journals, making decisions on manuscript disposition, and editing manuscripts for scientific accuracy and adherence to the journal style. They will interact with authors and reviewers and with the in-house copyediting and production staff. They are responsible for ensuring the scientific validity and quality of manuscripts published in the JAVMA and AJVR.
Ideal candidates will have a DVM/VMD in addition to research and clinical experience or will have a doctoral degree in a field relevant to veterinary medicine plus research experience in applied or clinical veterinary medicine. All candidates must have a demonstrated proficiency in scientific writing or editing, experience with critical appraisal of scientific literature, and an ability to communicate and work effectively with contributors to the AVMA journals.
