Based in Atalanta, Atalanta Falcons is a professional American football team competing in the National Football League (NFL) as a member of the League’s National Football Conference South Division. The franchise joined the NFL as an expansion team in 1965 when the NFL offered the team’s owner then, Rankin Smith a franchise to prevent him from joining the rival league, American Football League (AFL). For more than 5 decades of its existence, the team has won the division championships in 1980, 1998, 2004, 2010, 2012, and 2016 seasons. The franchise has also appeared in two Super Bowls, the first being in the 1998 season where they lost to Denver Broncos. Currently, the Falcons play their home games at the Mercedes Benz Stadium which opened in the 2017 season, while the headquarters and practice facilities are situated at a 50-acre site in the Flowery Branch, northeast of Atalanta in Hall County.
