Baylor University Medical Center (Baylor Dallas or BUMC), a division of Baylor Scott & White Health, first opened its doors in 1903 as Texas Baptist Memorial Sanitarium, a 14-room refurbished home with 25 beds. Baylor Scott & White Health, the biggest non - profit organization in Texas and one of the biggest in the country, was formed in 2013 after Baylor Health Care System and Scott and White Health Care. Baylor Scott & White now has 52 hospitals, over 800 patient care locations, over 7,300 active physicians, over 49,000 staff, and the Scott & White Health Plan. In its 2014–15 rankings, U.S. News & World Report named it one of the top 50 hospitals in the US for orthopedic treatment. In addition, the facility does spine surgery, as well as hip and knee replacements, and has a track record of success as the Center for nursing excellence.
