The company was established by Thomas Burberry in the year 1856 and focused on making outdoor attire before changing into the fashion industry. The company existed as an independent family company until 1955 when it was incorporated as a limited liability company. The company has been listed in the London Stock Exchange, having a constituent of the FTSE Index and ranked 73rd in the Interbrand's best global brands report.
