In 1927, the Department of Industrial Relations (DIR) was created. Its aim is to enhance working conditions for California's wage earners and to expand employment possibilities in the state. Wages, hours and breaks, overtime, retribution, workplace safety and health, apprenticeship training programs, and medical care for injured workers are all governed by DIR. DIR also publishes materials and hosts workshops and seminars to foster healthy workplace relationships, conducts research to improve its programs, and collaborates with other agencies to prosecute severe labor and tax law offenders in the underground economy. Job stability, compensated job training, a diverse and inclusive workplace, no gender pay gap, full medical, dental, and vision coverage, savings plans, and state-paid holidays and vacation time are among their perks.
