The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is an executive branch of the state of California in the United States. The department is part of the California State Transportation Agency, which reports to the governor (CalSTA). The California Department of Transportation is based in Sacramento. Caltrans controls the state's roadway system, which includes the California Freeway and Expressway System, as well as public transit networks throughout the state. It also funds and oversees three state-supported Amtrak intercity train lines known as Amtrak California. They provide a variety of bonuses and advantages to their employees, including health and dental insurance, retirement programs, paid vacations, sick leave, and other benefits.
