The California State Legislature is also called California State Assembly. The legislative body is made up of 80 members, each of whom represents roughly 465,000 people. The State Assembly has the highest population per representative ratio of any state legislature lower house and the second highest of any legislative lower house in the United States behind the federal House of Representatives, owing to the state's enormous population and relatively small legislature. Term limitations limit members elected to the legislature prior to 2012 to three two-year terms (a total of six years), whereas those elected in or after 2012 are able to serve in the legislature for a total of 12 years in any combination of two-year state assembly terms and four-year state.
