BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION:The position is part of a 5-person team who maintains facilities, infrastructure, and offers programming support for all Divisions within the Department. Duties vary often depending on immediate need including, but not limited to, operation of excavation equipment, driving dump truck to transport material or equipment to various sites, carpentry work from framing to finish, forestry practices from cutting and chipping brush to felling technical trees, light mechanical work maintaining equipment, as well as simple maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, hanging artwork, installing shelving etc.

The Engineering team often works directly with Warden Service, Fisheries & Wildlife Biologists, Staff at all Fish Hatcheries and Rearing Stations, Staff at the Maine Wildlife Park, and Admin staff at all office facilities.

This team is the only support staff for the Department covering the entire State of Maine. The typical work schedule is 4-10hr days Monday through Thursday with occasional overnight travel when working remote locations. Department issued clothing, cell phone, and computer is supplied, and all travel from Augusta is in State vehicles. All benefits for State of Maine employment pertain to this position including 13 paid holidays, paid vacation, health & life insurance, as well as the opportunity for extra work hours to increase your paid time off. CDL training for applicants who do not hold a CDL is also offered.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Two (2) years education and/or experience in carpentry.

Licensing Requirements:A class C driver’s license is required with expectations to obtain a class A CDL within 12 months of employment.

About the Carpenter role

Construction Carpenter

As Carpenters, we install walls, floors, roofs, and ceilings using appropriate materials such as steel, metal, wood, plastics, and composites of multiple materials depending on each job’s requirement. We also fit and install doors/door frames, interior and exterior trim using a carpenter’s level, and widow frames while erecting scaffolding and ladders to access areas above-ground levels. We prepare project layouts and determine the dimensions and materials required based on the specifications present on blueprints, sketches, and building plans. We also coordinate with metal specialists to cut materials to their specified measurements by using machines, hand tools, or power saws.
