Carriages Services, Inc. was founded by Melvin C. Payne in 1991. It is a provider of death care services and products, headquartered in Houston, Texas. Carriages Services, Inc. is also one of the fastest-growing public burial and cemetery service trading companies in the United States. Since its establishment, the carriage service firm has grown rapidly through the acquisition of cemeteries and local funeral homes. By the year 2000, the firm had become the fourth-largest player in the consolidation of the 'death care market,' owning and operating more than 180 funeral homes and 40 cemeteries in 30 states. The company operates through the following departments: Funeral and Cemetery Operations. The Funeral Operation Department provides a full set of services to meet the needs of family funerals, including consultation, corpse preparation, sales of coffins, and related funeral equipment. The cemetery Operations section provides interment services and merchandise, including markers and burial containers.
