About Certified Medical Dosimetrist

What does a Certified Medical Dosimetrist do?

As Certified Medical Dosimetrists, we work in the radiation department speculating with radiation therapy used to treat malignant cancers by passing a beam of radioactive seeds into or near the cancerous tumor. This action helps destroy cancer from developing further by killing its cells. We are part of the radiation oncology team which include medical physicist, radiation oncologist, radiation therapist and oncology nurses. We analyze the tumor, plan and prescribe the right amount of radiation of dose. We verify all the mathematical calculations needed in coming up with the radiation amount by use of a secondary check program. We also have a responsibility to report any equipment malefactions.

  • Work with the radiation therapist in the simulation of patients
  • verify mathematical calculation on radiation amount
  • maintain patient record
  • assist in setting up an appropriate treatment plan for a specific patient
