The Chicago Botanic Garden opened in 1972. It has now turned into one of the world’s great horticultural display gardens as well as living museums. More than one million people visited the Garden’s four natural areas and 27 gardens. These are uniquely situated on 385 acres on and around nine islands. Their permanent plant collection comprises about 2.6 million plants of 9,700 taxa. There are 50,000 members of Chicago Botanic Garden, making it one of the largest memberships of any U.S. botanic garden. The Garden is popular for its plant conservation science programs and innovative education. The Garden is among the 17 public gardens accredited by the American Association of Museums. The Lenhardt Library at the Garden comprises 110,000 volumes, including one of the nation’s best collections of rare botanical books. It is headquartered in Glencoe, Illinois. The Garden also maintains a renowned Bonsai Collection.
