About CHIEF OF Staff

What does a CHIEF OF Staff do?

As Chiefs of Staff (COS), we are part of the leadership team of for-profits and nonprofits. This is a senior position to help free up CEOs' time so they focus on where they can have the most impact. The role varies from organization to organization. The best individuals in this position will complement the skills of the CEO. Working as COS, we are considered to be CEOs' right hands and advisors, and have a bird's-eye view across teams and departments.

Core tasks:

  • work with the CEO to set strategic priorities
  • manage CEO’s time, help prioritize
  • act as gatekeepers: ensure decision-making at key times, where CEO’s input and authority are the most needed
  • prepare for and follow up on meetings for the CEO, coordinate agendas
  • manage internal and external communications
  • oversee large, cross-functional, organization-wide projects or initiatives
  • strategic planning and alignment
  • benchmarking
  • manage the hiring process for leadership roles reporting to the CEO
  • manage other members of the CEO's cabinet office
