Ashland is a city of nearly 21,000 people in Southern Oregon, at the southern edge of the Rogue Valley along Interstate 5. Ashland is also home to Southern Oregon University and a public school district that is regularly ranked in the top 100 in the nation. Ashland has continued to retain a good sense of identity, thanks in part to the high level of services it provides to its residents. Ashland has a Mayor/City Manager system of government, with resident councils doing most of the city's affairs, which boosts civic interest and political unity. Ashland's 20,960 voters elect the City Council to act as the administrative body. The Mayor, who presides over Council meetings, is elected for a four-year term at large. Six members of the Council are elected at large for four-year staggered terms. They have a team that is committed to serving the cause of the organization.
