The City of Lompoc (/lmpok/, LOM-poke) is a city in Santa Barbara County, California (Purisimeo: Lompo', 'Stagnant Water'). On August 13, 1888, the city was incorporated. The Chumash people lived in the region around Lompoc before European settlers arrived. The city's name comes from the Purisimeo word 'Lum Poc,' which means 'stagnant waters' or 'lagoon.' The Rancho Lompoc land grant was sold by the Mexican government in 1837. Lompoc was supposed to be called New Vineland, after the New Jersey temperance colony. With the completion of nearby Camp Cooke, it became a military town (now Vandenberg Air Force Base). The city is recognized as the world's flower seed capital.
