The oldest structure used by the city council of Minneapolis, Minnesota, as well as Hennepin County, Minnesota, is Minneapolis City Hall and Hennepin County Courthouse, which was constructed by Long and Kees in 1888. Since its construction, the structure has mostly acted as local government offices, with the city occupying 60% of the space and the private sector 40%. The Municipal House Commission manages the building, which is collectively run by the state and county. The chair of the County Board, the mayor of Minneapolis, a trustee of the County Board, and a member of the Minneapolis City Council make up the Commission. The president of the Commission is the chair of the County Board, and the vice president is the mayor. The National Register of Historic Places listed the City Hall and Courthouse in 1974.
