The organization of Greene County was started on the donation of 50 acres by Campbell in 1833. The land was donated to build a town and lots of it was sold to new settlers. Springfield was an area of 500 population by 1835 and the town incorporation took place in 1838. In the same year, the forceable removal of Cherokee by the United States government from Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia and they moved to “Indian Territory.” During this journey, thousands of them died which was named it Trail of Tears.
