The City of Tallahassee is the capital of the state of Florida in the United States. It is the county seat and Leon County's only incorporated municipality. In 1824, Tallahassee named the capital of Florida, which was then known as the Florida Territory. Florida State Institution, considered the nation's eighth-best public university by U.S. News & World Report, is located in Tallahassee. Florida A&M University, the fifth-largest historically black university in terms of overall enrollment, is also located there. Tallahassee Community College is a significant public university that primarily acts as a feeder school for Florida State University and Florida A&M University. With a student population of over 70,000, Tallahassee qualifies as a major college town.
