City of Williamsburg is the city which was founded in 1632. It was the only municipality in Virginia, serving as the educational, political and social hub of wealthiest state and the 13 colonies' largest. In 1699, City of Williamsburg took over as Virginia's Colonial Capital from Jamestown, the first permanent English-speaking settlement in the New World. The foundations of representative government were laid here. Many of the fledgling American republic's leaders learnt their statecraft here. Independence was gained nearby in Yorktown. Today, city of Williamsburg is a self-contained city with a population of 14,954 people as of 2019. City of Williamsburg is located midway between Richmond and Norfolk/Virginia Beach on Interstate 64, in the heart of the Eastern Virginia region, which has a population of over 2.5 million people.
