The city of Winston Salem was created when the two neighboring towns of Winston and Salem merged in 1913. The city is the county seat of Forsyth County in North Carolina with an approximate population of approximately 247,000. It is North Carolina’s fifth-most populous city and America’s eighty-ninth. The city is often referred to as Twin city owing to its dual heritage, and Camel City because of its involvement in the manufacture of Camel cigarettes.
