The Cleveland Community College started on July 1, 1965. The Cleveland Unit of Gaston College was founded by the then Shelby Chamber of Commerce and the Cleveland County Board of Commissioners. Led by Dr. James Broughton Petty, the unit started conducting courses in two leased buildings on North Morgan Street in the fall of 1965. The college started running a few classes, including practical nursing, with less than a couple of full-time staff and less than 40 students. The college's goal is to accelerate student achievement and economic influence through diverse education and training programs for individuals and businesses in our region. It was founded in the North Carolina area of Shelby. For talented teachers, Cleveland Community College offers opportunities. It delivers fair salaries and benefits such as paid holidays, medical care, and retirement plan.
