Client Overview:

Our client, a designated level one trauma center, is looking for Medical Technologists to work in their high volume Laboratory. There are several positions and shifts available.

Distinguished nationally for its excellence, this hospital is also one of the premier teaching hospitals in the United States and serves as the primary teaching hospital for a local school of medicine. Approximately one hour from Atlanta, this is a historic and very affordable area full of rural charm yet close to all the amenities a big city offers.

Overview:

Conduct examinations on specimens collected from patients and animals for bacterial, viral, protozoan and fungal infections.

Skill Requirements:

Computer skills
Calibrate, operate, troubleshoot and maintain the equipment
Dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are required to collect and prepare specimens
Follow instructions and procedures very carefully
Critical thinking skills to recognize problems and develop solutions or alternative approaches
Lab safety and infection prevention is of paramount importance
Good interpersonal skills and excellent communication skills

Responsibilities:

Plan and conduct complex research projects, such as improving sterilization procedures or developing new drugs to combat infectious diseases
Perform laboratory experiments that are used in the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses
Supervise the work of biological technicians and other workers and evaluate the accuracy of their results
Isolate and maintain cultures of bacteria or other microorganisms for study
Identify and classify microorganisms found in specimens collected from humans, plants, animals, or the environment
Monitor the effect of microorganisms on plants, animals, other microorganisms, or the environment
Review literature and the findings of other researchers and attend conferences
Prepare technical reports, publish research papers, and make recommendations based on their research findings
Present research findings to scientists, non-scientist executives, engineers, other colleagues, and the public

Education and Certification:

Bachelor’s degree with a major in biology, microbiology or another biological or physical science
Certification as a medical technologist through ASCP or AMT

Tasks

Conduct chemical analysis of body fluids, including blood, urine, or spinal fluid, to determine presence of normal or abnormal components.

Analyze laboratory findings to check the accuracy of the results.

Operate, calibrate, or maintain equipment used in quantitative or qualitative analysis, such as spectrophotometers, calorimeters, flame photometers, or computer-controlled analyzers.

Collect and study blood samples to determine the number of cells, their morphology, or their blood group, blood type, or compatibility for transfusion purposes, using microscopic techniques.

Enter data from analysis of medical tests or clinical results into computer for storage.

Establish or monitor quality assurance programs or activities to ensure the accuracy of laboratory results.

Analyze samples of biological material for chemical content or reaction.

Set up, clean, and maintain laboratory equipment.

Provide technical information about test results to physicians, family members, or researchers.

Cultivate, isolate, or assist in identifying microbial organisms or perform various tests on these microorganisms.

Supervise, train, or direct lab assistants, medical and clinical laboratory technicians or technologists, or other medical laboratory workers engaged in laboratory testing.

Develop, standardize, evaluate, or modify procedures, techniques, or tests used in the analysis of specimens or in medical laboratory experiments.

Harvest cell cultures at optimum time, based on knowledge of cell cycle differences and culture conditions.

Select and prepare specimens and media for cell cultures, using aseptic technique and knowledge of medium components and cell requirements.

Obtain, cut, stain, and mount biological material on slides for microscopic study and diagnosis, following standard laboratory procedures.

Conduct medical research under direction of microbiologist or biochemist.
