Counter Culture Coffee was established by Brett Smith and Fred Houk, who met when Brett was in business school at UNC. It sold the first bag of roasted coffee in Durham, NC, to Pop's Trattoria. As of August 2020, Zekarias Thompson has been recruited as the internal specialist for diversity, equality, and inclusion. Zekarias has more than 8 years of coffee industry experience and has been with Counter Culture Coffee since 2014. Beginning in August 2020, all Counter Culture workers will begin cross-departmental DE&I preparation. It also collaborated with Kantola to provide continuous training on organization-wide abuse and discrimination. Counter Culture Coffee offers numerous posts for experts.
