The Cumberland County School (CCS) system is the 5th largest school district in North Carolina and the 78th biggest in the nation. The system serves more than 52,000 students in grades pre-kindergarten through 12th in 88 schools. The CCS is the county's largest employer, followed by the federal government. More than 16,161 CCS students (31.20 percent) have a military connection. The CCS serves a very varied student community with students from more than 44 different nations. More than 80 distinct native languages are spoken by pupils in the CCS. Cumberland County, in southern North Carolina, contains a blend of urban and suburban elements.
