Position Summary:

The Director of Chemeketa Press responds to the college's access core theme by managing the development of high-quality, affordable, effective, and culturally relevant textbooks as alternatives to commercially published materials. The mission of Chemeketa Press includes creating and sustaining a new model for textbook publishing defined by faculty support and student involvement. This position is responsible for the supervision and management of the Chemeketa Press department in coordination with other college services. This position also represents the College and the Press in interactions with the media, the general public, other colleges, and professional organizations. The Director of Chemeketa Press reports to the Vice President of Governance and Administration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Essential Functions:

Supervisory and Management

* Supervises department faculty and classified employees, including job and task assignment and performance evaluations
* Works closely with Business Services, Human Resources, Chemeketa Bookstore, Institutional Research, and other college sections to coordinate the work of the Press with the College as a whole
* Tracks and manages department budget
* Oversees or directs all contract and licensing agreements in partnership with other Press editors
* Sets work priorities for the department
* Oversees short- and long-range design, evaluation, and redesign of Press systems
* Creates a continuous improvement plan for the Press


* Manages online, phone, and written communications for general Press business
* Manages responses to media queries
* Works closely with instructional administrators to maintain clear lines of communication about Press projects
* Manages communications with administrators at other colleges
* Manages communications with other college presses and professional publishing organizations
* Provides direction for marketing manager in matters related to the Press website, social media accounts, and marketing strategy

Development and Instruction

* Works with Chemeketa Press staff to oversee book development and support systems, including submissions, manuscript development, design and layout, printing, review, sales and distribution, author support, and instructional support
* Works with faculty editors to oversee instructional planning and systems, including internships, faculty training, curriculum development, credit and noncredit classes, and online materials
* Recruits and oversees program and external partnerships for major book development projects, projects that integrate Press work into existing courses, and student publications in support of writing across the curriculum
* Documents Press activities and lessons learned for the benefit of the Press and other college publishers
* Participates in manuscript and book development projects as needed


* Embraces diversity and actively collaborates effectively with a variety of students, staff, and the public from diverse cultural, social, economic, and educational backgrounds
* Participates in recruitment and retention of students at an individual and institutional level in promotion of student success
* Embraces, understands, and uses appropriate technology tools to accomplish job functions
* Provides high-quality, effective service to internal and external customers through continuous improvement and adoption of lean office practices


Minimum Qualifications:

Master's degree from an accredited institution in field related to writing or publishing

* AND-

One (1) year of full-time equivalent college teaching experience

* AND-

Professional experience with book publishing systems

Core Competencies

* Knowledge of: electronic book publishing systems, basic business operations, and relevant software, including Adobe design software, Microsoft Office applications, and a relational database system such as FileMaker Pro
* Skills with: project leadership, including scheduling and meeting deadlines, leading collaborative work groups, keeping meticulous records, managing staff, and providing high-quality verbal and written communication, including shaping messages to a variety of internal and public audiences
* Ability to: research and organize information, train and oversee others, lead a small, creative team, handle the stress of challenging deadlines, invent new processes and solutions, and write well in every situation

Preferred Qualifications

* Professional experience as a copyeditor, technical writer, or editor
* Experience publishing textbooks and educational materials that serve a diverse audience
* Experience managing a business and staff
* Excellent skills with written and verbal communication
* Experience with community colleges
* Current Chemeketa Professional Development Cultural Competence Certificate

Terms of Employment:

* This is a 100%, 12-month exempt assignments of the D1 band and grade
* Requires flexible work schedule to meet program needs, which may include evenings and/or weekends
* Requires the provision of official transcripts upon hire
* Upon hire, must pass security inquiry which may include criminal history; only information relevant to the position will be considered
