About Director OF Photography

What does a Director OF Photography do?

Working as Directors of Photography, we are responsible for ordering and testing camera and lighting equipment. We supervise a camera and lighting crew. We are responsible for editing a film's visual elements in post production. We work alongside a Film Director and help determine narrative elements through visual style. We develop a film's visual style. we determine lighting requirements on set. We decide on the best camera angles and frames for scenes. We observe set or location and review drawings and other information relating to natural or artificial conditions. We determine the filming and lighting requirements.

Core tasks:

  • order and test lighting and camera equipment
  • supervise a camera crew and direct camera movement
  • select the appropriate film stock
  • determine camera aperture settings
  • control natural or artificial lighting conditions
  • liaise with electricians to ensure adequate electrical supply
  • determine elements such as shutter angles, filters, depth of field, and camera distance
  • edit visual elements in post-production
