I got frustrated at a customer during a clearance sale. This customer came through my line with 6 overflowing buggy loads of stuff (No exaggeration) and every item needed to be manually marked down. She was right in my face the entire time making sure I took every penny off, but that was all well and good. This customer came in early that day and had been there ALL DAY. I put up with it with a smile while she held up my line 6 different times. Each time she had 10 or more people in line behind her getting upset. Finally, at 8:35pm she came up again with a 7th overflowing buggy load of stuff. This location closes at 9pm. Understandably I got frustrated threw down my calculator and walked away. I got the MOD and said you need to handle this because I'm done. They FIRED me for that LMAO. THE MANAGERS and DISTRICT MANAGERS are the worst I've ever seen in the 55 years I've been on this Earth. Stay far away from this company or you'll regret it, I promise you.

They budget 130-160 hours a week to cover payroll for everyone except the manager. The store is open 91-98 hours percweek. you need at least one cashier for that time. They expect cashiers to stock between customers. That works when you can. Another 50 hots a week would have the stores looking immaculate which would raise sales.

Pros and Cons
Pay is o k at when you get hours. Customers become friends.
Too much is expected for the tools they supply.

The pay is horrible and they treat you like a slave. If you are not in the "clique" they treat you horribly. The employees are very rude and disrespectful to customers. The district manager doesn't do anything he promises. I worked 7 days a week for 2 months straight all holidays and hardly was able to take time off. I never was recognized for the hard work. I was also lied on so another employee could get my position. they are very racist so if you are a minority don't even bother.

On a day to day basis, you come in stock some shelfs maybe do other side projects, the JOB it self isnt hard. They except you to do every job available for a starting pay of 9 dollars an hour. I had an older lady work for me she worked there 3 years and is STILL making under 9 an hour. I oversaw the store for 2 years because they couldn't find anyone for the job. My District Manger was unhelpful, I Worked all day by myself no bathroom breaks, no breaks in general because I was by myself all day. Stocking shelfs, ringing up customers, scanning in vendors, doing planograms & pretty much everything else. If you want a headache everyday, work here.

No support for store teams. No structure that is followed. Doesn’t listen to complaints about building maintenance or hazardous condition. Asking too much of one person and not paying enough for one job title much least two or three. While working at this location I was told that it didn’t matter where items went (going off barcodes or prices) just as long as it was out of the warehouse. I worked at Dollar General for over a year and most of that time the doors were broken at my store and there was no heat in the store. The heat for the store never got put in and the doors stayed broken until a year later. When you live in Northern Minnesota and the temperature drops into the -50s in the winter you would think it would have been a priority to fix. Customers complained but they still shopped.

I have worked for Dollar General on 2 occasions. Both of these times i was promised training to have my own to to run, and it never happened. I tried to succeed but there is no structure/organization for me to get a routine down(learn a few things 1st not all at once with no clear direction)to continue to learn. I did notice that Dollar General had a tendency to promote too fast; meaning the store managers are being thrown into the position with no training because they have no one else to run the store. I would've been proud to manage a Dollar General store. I like the products and the company overall.

But they dont tell you they are so short staffed that you will be managing multiple locations, dealing with undependale deliveries, working from 6am until 11pm because of late arrival trucks. Wait until you work with people who don't like to work. Wait until you will be abused because you actually work. Wait until you work for hours alone expected to get 5 rolltainers done. Wait until you work double because another manager won't show up. Wait until to realize that all you do isn't worth what they pay you. As a keyholder I was making $8.75, my new job offered me $9.50 and they didn't match it. Now I'm a cashier (that's my only duty) and I'm making $13.25. The best decision in my life was turning down the ASM position that would have paid me $10. Best decision I ever made.

I worked for dg for 4 years. I cleaned/ran/new manager clean almost every store from South Charleston to the Ohio worked over 69 and was fired due to asm not showing for store open and never was added to the group to be able to ask anyone for help. dm was strict and didn’t have any cares unless you were “ his people “but yet the whole entire employee base could vouch for me, and still not looked at for a dispute, and was just told that they agree, so if you have any type of children family, this is not a job for you unless you are having sexual relations with your boss.

I worked at dollar general over 10 years ago, in Waldorf MD. I filled out the application on a whim. It turned out to be an excellent move. The management was excellent and the other workers friendly and knowledgeable. I enjoyed my time there. I only left when I moved cross country to Arizona. I regret not transferring that's how much I liked working for Dollar General.

Pros and Cons
Great work hours discounts on merchandise

It wouldn't be professional of me to leave my story, but Dollar General is by far the worst company I have ever worked for. I recommend the job to no-one.

Pros and Cons
Coworkers drinking/drug use on the job if they show up for work.
One can work 40+ hours a week and still only make under 200$.

The dollar general I worked at was very unorganized and always had boxes and karts full of boxes all over the store. Nothing was ever put where it was supposed to be so it was hard to find the proper placing half the time. I would do my best to better organize shelves and try to unload boxes but it was usually me and one other employee doing it alone because the manager never did anything and neither made others do anything either.

Pros and Cons
It was a job
Unorganized

Dollar General places the majority of the responsibility on its managers: for about $40k or so to start, you can expect to semi-live at the store, unless you can find and retain great personnel. Thing is, you only have a set amount of hours for all employeees under you; thereafter, it is you. Managers are salaried, employees hourly. If a manager works 40, 80, 120 hours in a week, same pay. For an employee, expect near 40-hour weeks during Christmas, etc., and lucky to have 15-hour weeks in mid May, etc.(slow times) The hours will ebb and flow with the demand for items. The entire store is videotaped, so best behavior at all times. Corporate tends to be paranoid, and will bring up misbehavior. The place runs on the principal of stocking fast-moving items at near Walmart prices. Thus, the staple items are well represented, and a few seasonal items. These places thrive due to the strength of sales (food, paper goods, etc.) And keeping overhead low.

Pros and Cons
Comraderie
Managers are "it," and must produce; emp hours are short

I loved working there when I first started. The atmosphere was greaat and the company was supportive in face of adversity for their employees. They have great benefits and incentive programs. If you take the time to do things correctly (product rotation, FIFO stocking) you won't get anywhere though. If an employee calls corporate and complains about their teammates, the complaints are taken to be true and there is no investigation done. No questions asked. The ones complained about will get the boot whether they did anything wrong or not.

Pros and Cons
The customers are great
inconsistency

Worked for this company for almost 3 years. Upper management refuses to acknowledge that stores need more hours, and expect the Store Manager to work and make up for what the company refuses to give to stores. Worked on average 80 hours a week, sometimes weeks at a time with no days off.

This would be a good place to work if you were made to feel like a team. I worked here two different times and with all the things you were asked to do and with little training it made it hard for me.

Ok guys well I started with this company in 2012 as a key holder or manager on duty. When I started with this company I was making a whole 8.50 to run the store in the absence of the store manager and assistant manager. After a year of this I was promoted to assistant store manager which neither of these positions are any different than a regular sales associate because you still had to run register, put the truck up, recover the store, clean the store as well as take care of the customer. Another 3 years went by and the manager I had worked under for 4 years was transferred to another store and I was promoted yet again. This time I was super excited about this one because I have never been a store manager before. I thought it came with good pay and a much easier laid back work load. Boy was I wrong. 36k a year no off day open to close shifts no proper training just a week long class on how to interview candidates and finding the most qualified candidates!

Nothing at all

During my time at Dollar General, I had asked for morning shifts due to my newborn daughter refusing to drink milk for my husband, but I was refused. I always had to work the cash register, mainly by myself, all while having to stock the shelves. Never less, they did left me mark discounted items and came to help me if I desperately needed, but I was mostly left up front by myself. And if it got busy during someone's lunch, they were supposed to monitor the cameras and help me if needed, but most of the time, I ended up having to wait for lunch breaks to be over to get some help.

Pros and Cons
Get to learn how to price items and sometimes offer helping on remote locations
Will not work with you regarding schedule, usually one person on register, hard to get help

I was expected to do everything. I applied for the sales associate job and ended up working the register, opening, and closing, cleaning the floors and bathrooms, stocking and restocking shelves, and providing customer service and customer support. I was overworked and not even compensated enough for my hard work. The people weren't bad though.

friendly co-workers

I work a minimum of 56 hours a week for 42,000.00 a year. I am required to work a minimum of 48 but it’s almost impossible to get everything done considering we are open from 8am- 10pm 7 days a week. Of course you have to go in before we open and we don’t get out at 10pm because we have to count money etc. Some days I go in at 6 in the morning. I have a budget of about 124 hours a week for my hourly paid staff. So even going on 15 minutes before open and 15 minutes after close we operate 101.5 hours a week. So my 48 hours plus a budget of 124 hours is 172 hours which means to have I have to work alone for about 30 hours a week if I only want to work the 48 hours. That’s over 4 hours a day by myself. This is not safe in todays society. As a store Manager. I am required to do all office work run register stock clean check in vendors whilst there by myself. I really wonder if it is worth it. Oh we are also required to work 6 days a week mandatory. I have gone months with no day off

Pros and Cons
You can grow pretty quickly
No time with family. I feel I am married to dollar general. I never see my husband or kids.
