With 452 students, Elder High School debuted as a four-year high school in the autumn of 1922, becoming Cincinnati's fourth high school and the city's first Catholic diocesan high school. For the first five years, Elder was a coeducational school until Seton High School, an all-girls high school, opened next door in the fall of 1927. Elder has been a Catholic, all-male, comprehensive high school since the 1927-1928 school year, admitting pupils ranging from the academically challenged to the intellectually talented. The school motto, Altiora, is Latin for 'strive for higher things,' and it is a value that is taught both within and outside of the classroom, in the corridors, on the playing fields, and beyond.
