What does an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant do?

As Expanded Functions Dental Assistants (EFDAs), our primary responsibilities include performing advanced dental procedures under the supervision of a licensed dentist. We take on tasks like applying sealants, fluoride, and topical anesthetics to ensure patient comfort and dental health. EFDAs are skilled in taking preliminary impressions for dental appliances and fabricating temporary crowns. We also provide patient education on postoperative care and oral hygiene practices. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of dental instruments and the ability to assist in complex dental surgeries.
