Oversee 300,000+ sq. ft. Mishawaka distribution and fulfillment center.  Works directly with managers to plan and coordinate a wide variety of construction projects, including space management and general warehouse repairs and maintenance. The position also oversees the overall housekeeping of the warehouse and office space, as well as the use of materials, tools, and equipment.

Designs, directs and administers the occupational health and safety function in compliance with all federal and state laws. Directs safety programs to provide a safe working environment for employees and visitors. Develops safety programs and policies. Manages the training of plant personnel in all areas of safety. Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations and company safety policies.


Essential Functions:  

  • Plans and coordinates projects including but not limited to: books shelves, pallet racks, new Responsible for writing weekly report concerning project status, including deadlines and cost.

  • Supervises and manages a crew up to 10 team members. Including performance evaluations, proper training, communicating all changes and developments effectively throughout the Facilities department.

  • Directs the safety programs for the Mishawaka site. Recommends the design and implementation of new programs to minimize company losses due to accidents. Measures effectiveness of programs.

  • Ensures compliance with OSHA regulations.

  • Inspect machinery, equipment and working conditions to ensure compliance with OSHA. Maintain OSHA file and support documents. Accompanies OSHA inspector on plant inspections.

  • Regularly inspects and reviews warehouse operations to assure compliance of operation and equipment with state and federal regulations. Reports any potential violations and recommends corrections as needed.

  • Manage workers compensation claims, including processing medical bills while serving as a liaison between the company and insurance carrier, physicians and employees and distribution of compensation payments to employees.

  • Compose weekly/monthly safety training materials for all departments and maintain training records for all employees.

  • Coordinates safety committee and conducts monthly safety committee meetings.

  • Conducts new employee safety orientation.

  • Order medical supplies (first aid cabinet) and treat medical emergencies occurring while present in the plant.

  • Analyzes accident statistics to establish necessary precautions and changes needed for warehouse safety. Communicates safety policy and procedure changes to management personnel.

  • Reviews all safety areas to review policies, determine causes, identify corrective actions and conducts training in areas such as: ergonomics, CTD cases, emergency response team, lockout/tagout, hazard communication, and personal protective equipment. Plans, budgets and administers the safety and safety incentive programs. Investigates all safety related incidents, reviews incident reports and completes necessary reports for insurance carrier, risk management system and corporate safety office.

  • Assist logistics manager with fleet related safety responsibilities, including drug testing of drivers, semi-annual driver safety training and serve as member of accident review board.

  • Works with the maintenance team in regards to the safety compliance of all power equipment (fork lifts) and conducts operator fork lift training as required under OSHA regulations.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of health and safety functions within a manufacturing or warehouse environment.

  • Prior involvement in OSHA safety inspections, accident investigations and knowledge of state and federal safety codes required.

  • Responsible for general warehouses and offices repairs including interior and exterior perimeters, electrical issues, roofing issues, drain issues, parking lot issues, etc.

  • Responsible for overall cleanliness of the Warehouses and office spaces.

  • Ensures stocks of necessary maintenance supplies are available as well as accurately reported.

  • Responsible for reduction of CAM & Utilities.

  • Responsible for keep track and approved maintenance vendors bills. For example snow removal, electrician, overhead doors, forklift maintenance, gardening, pure water, etc.

  • Protection of assets, policies to hold employees responsible for coveted equipment.

  • Responsible for security of the premises, keys, locks, surveillance, etc.

  • Responsible for keeping an accurate list of Inventory of items. Keys, tools, equipment, and materials in proper condition.


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advance organizational and time management skills.

  • Advance knowledge of construction techniques and materials.

  • Advance knowledge of OSHA standards

  • Proficiency with Excel

  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail.

  • Intermediate proficiency for a variety of software applications including Microsoft Suite, email/Outlook, Microsoft project and the Internet.

  • Must have an understanding and commitment to the values and mission of Better World Books.  

  • Must be a team player and be able to work in a fast-paced, exciting, and entrepreneurial environment.

  • Typical office equipment:  desktop, laptop, cell phone, telephone, fax.

  • Experience in the reporting and management for Workers Compensation claims.

  • Strong computer skills a must.
