Under general supervision from the Facilities Operations Coordinator, the position is responsible for the effective management, operation and security of the BIOS facilities in SEL, SES and MBRB, Greenhouse, and James Woodworth Prairie. Facilities Operations Specialist will perform following duties: property control and inventory of all equipment purchases; assign and monitor space utilization; access control and keys for all biology faculty, staff and students; purchase and respond to building related emergencies and manage the storeroom.Duties:KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:(35%) Coordinates inventory of new equipment, maintain database and monitor property control. Prepares requisitions for supplies, keeps receipts of goods and materials, and maintains inventory of university property* Maintain BIOS storage facility for unused inventory* Conduct annual and/or periodic inventory of equipment and supplies* Assess equipment for removal from inventory, schedule disposal through UIC movers and OBFS surplus when applicable(20%) Assists in planning, coordinating, and directing custodial and housekeeping activities for the Department of Biological Sciences in SEL, SES, MBRB, green house and JWP.* Provides troubleshooting advice to department on physical plant issues regarding emergency situations affecting BIOS areas and alternative solutions; address emergencies affecting physical plant such as flooding, water and electric shut downs etc.* Provides advisories to department personnel of service interruptions and work in progress(15%) Assists in coordinating construction, renovation, repairs and/or maintenance projects.* Prepares recommendations for improvements of facilities necessary to maintain efficient operation* Provides advise, monitoring, and follow-up to work-related activities of craftsmen and tradesmen* Assists in coordinating the move of large equipment, teaching and research equipment* Transports small equipment for repair to and from the electronic engineer(10%) Assist EHSO with lab inspections including chemical removal and safety measures/classes. Follows provisions for safety of university property, for securing records and documents, and for protection against fire for persons and property* Update and distribute safety documents related to the teaching and research laboratories* Ensure that all labs have active spill and first aid kits* Responsible for proper disposal of known and unknown chemicals during safety inspections and laboratory clean up* Monitor the lab fume hoods and coordinate with Facilities Manager to schedule needed repairs(5%) Plan and coordinate the use of BIOS facilities including meeting rooms and classrooms.* Coordinate and provide assistance for room scheduling and access* Recommend use of alternate rooms/facilities for faculty projects* Arranges facilities for approved conferences, short courses, seminars, meetings, and gatherings* Responsible for office and laboratory set-up and clean up(10%) Provides coverage and back-up for the animal quarters (AQ) in the absence of the Laboratory Animal Care Supervisor.* Monitor daily temperature of the animal quarters* Maintain animal cages* Reports to faculty/AQ supervisor any issues(5%) Perform other related duties as assigned.Qualifications:MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:* High School Diploma or equivalent.* Any one or combination totaling two (2) years (24 months) from the categories below:* college course work in facility management, operations management, or a closely related field, as measured by the following conversion table or its proportional equivalent:* 60 semester hours or an Associate's Degree equals one (1) year (12 months)* training from a vocational, technical, or an armed forces program which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.* work experience which includes building operations such as coordination of building maintenance and work orders, construction management, hospitality, or closely related experience.* Must have valid Driver's License as individual will need to travel to off-site location (JW Prairie) and to facilities on both East and West sides of campus.To Apply: For fullest consideration, please complete an online application by clicking the Apply for Position button below.All civil service positions require an exam.
