Fairfax Water was chartered as the non-profit public water company by a Virginia State Corporation Commission of 1957, and was named by the elected Fairfax County Board of Supervisors, including the 10-member board made up of the Fairfax County resident. The daily Fairfax Water operations are managed by an overall boss, assisted by a workforce of 439 water specialists. Water is one of Washington's lowest asset and only a few water utilities have a AAA ranking from the top three financial rating providers. Fairfax Water is one of the most significant ratings in Washeron. In compliance with the regulations defined by the Environmental Protection Agency and based on the US Clean Drinking Water Statute, the Virginia Department of Health controls water quality in Fairfax Water.
