This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time summer Student Technical Assistant positions for the Department of Fisheries & Wildlife at Oregon State University (OSU).
These two student positions would collect data from stream research sites in the summer of 2020. The data can only be collected during low flows of summertime. The data will be used by PIs to calibrate and validate models of water flow and availability. These summer field assistants will gather field data to support research on aquatic food webs and potential impacts of climate change on aquatic habitats. The research is being conducted in collaboration with US Forest Service (USFS) to evaluate the effectiveness of a novel stream restoration method on food webs and habitat and with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to quantify the current distribution of headwater streams that would require riparian buffers during harvest and how that might change across lithographic provinces of western Oregon and with changing climate.
Regular schedule will be four 10 hr days, Monday-Thursday. Field work will entail working outdoors in forests and streams most days and driving between sites on gravel roads. Walking and carrying up to 35 lbs on uneven and slippery terrain, climbing over logs, wading in streams, hiking up steep slopes. In the second half of the summer, there will be regular travel to sites in western Oregon with car camping at night for 3 nights per week.
Position Duties 30% Data collection in streams in the McKenzie Basin including sampling aquatic substrates, measuring wood, surveying locations
45% Field work throughout Western Oregon to identify presence of flow in specific sections of streams using detailed GPS protocols and software
25% Managing and compiling data from the field collections
