Job Description:

The Assistant Chief Flight Instructor will be expected to maintain the standards of the office, provide exceptional leadership, and maintain daily oversight over the Fixed-Wing flight training program and approved training courses. Plan on daily interaction with all flight instructors, students, and the various departments throughout SUU Flight Operations.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assistant Chief Flight Instructor-

Counsel/advise CFIs on TCO content, requirements, and flight records.
Ensure compliance with Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations (FAR Parts 61, 91, and 141).
Certify student records for Part 141 graduation.
Administer standardization; Flight Proficiency checks and Student Stage checks.
Coordinate with academic departments to insure students' success.
Mentor new instructors and students.
Assist in conducting standardization and safety seminars and student events.
Suggest changes for the improvement of any aspect SUU Flight Operations.
Assist in the performance of other duties as assigned by the Director of Flight Operations or Chief Flight Instructor.
Conduct student review boards.
Assume Chief CFI duties and responsibilities in their absence.
Coordinate and interview potential new-hires.

Administration and Management-

Provide support and assistance to Chief Flight Instructor
Develop, monitor and maintain policies and procedures.
Assist in developing and monitoring flight hour budget
Monitor student training to ensure that timelines are being met.
Support the Marketing department in promoting the FW program.
Provide direction and motivation to all team members.

Operations Liaison-

Conduct liaison with FAA, ATC, and other relevant organizations.
Assists coordination between flight operations and academic instructors.
Coordinate with all departments within Flight Operations to facilitate FW programs success.
Facilitate coordination between dispatch and maintenance
Improve communication networks between departments

Air Transportation/Non-Instructional Flight-

Conduct discovery and intro flights
Perform maintenance test flights in a timely manner.
Support University special flight activities

SUU Representative-

Promote SUU Aviation programs to the public.
Conduct Tours of Flight Operations.
Attend and network at industry events on behalf of the program.

Education and Experience Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Minimum FAA certifications-

Commercial and Instrument Airplane certificates.
Certified Flight Instructor and Instrument Instructor Airplane certificates.
Meet the requirements of FAR 141.36 Assistant Chief Instructor:
- 1,000 hours PIC,
- 500 hours Dual Given,
- 50 hours Simulated Instrument, &
- 1.5 years of Instruction Experience.
Experience with FARs and Part 141 Pilot School Operations.
Second-Class FAA Medical Certificate and the ability to maintain it.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree
Two-Years Part 141 Leadership Experience
Experience with SUU training course outlines and computer systems.
Experience with SUU online flight training records system.
Meet the experience requirements of FSIMS 8900.2C for Designated Pilot Examiners:
2,000 Total Time; which includes:
- 1,000 in airplanes,
- 500 in class,
- 100 at night,
- 200 in complex,
- 100 instrument flight (actual or simulated)
- in the past 12 months: 300 hours in airplanes

Tasks

Work as part of a flight team with other crew members, especially during takeoffs and landings.

Use instrumentation to guide flights when visibility is poor.

Start engines, operate controls, and pilot airplanes to transport passengers, mail, or freight, adhering to flight plans, regulations, and procedures.

Contact control towers for takeoff clearances, arrival instructions, and other information, using radio equipment.

Monitor gauges, warning devices, and control panels to verify aircraft performance and to regulate engine speed.

Respond to and report in-flight emergencies and malfunctions.

Steer aircraft along planned routes, using autopilot and flight management computers.

Check passenger and cargo distributions and fuel amounts to ensure that weight and balance specifications are met.

Monitor engine operation, fuel consumption, and functioning of aircraft systems during flights.

Inspect aircraft for defects and malfunctions, according to pre-flight checklists.

Choose routes, altitudes, and speeds that will provide the fastest, safest, and smoothest flights.

Confer with flight dispatchers and weather forecasters to keep abreast of flight conditions.

Direct activities of aircraft crews during flights.

Brief crews about flight details, such as destinations, duties, and responsibilities.

Order changes in fuel supplies, loads, routes, or schedules to ensure safety of flights.

Record in log books information, such as flight times, distances flown, and fuel consumption.

Make announcements regarding flights, using public address systems.

Perform minor maintenance work, or arrange for major maintenance.

Test and evaluate the performance of new aircraft.

Coordinate flight activities with ground crews and air traffic control and inform crew members of flight and test procedures.

File instrument flight plans with air traffic control to ensure that flights are coordinated with other air traffic.

Conduct in-flight tests and evaluations at specified altitudes and in all types of weather to determine the receptivity and other characteristics of equipment and systems.

Instruct other pilots and student pilots in aircraft operations and the principles of flight.

Plan and formulate flight activities and test schedules and prepare flight evaluation reports.

Load smaller aircraft, handling passenger luggage and supervising refueling.

Evaluate other pilots or pilot-license applicants for proficiency.
