The Flushing Hospital Medical Center, also known as Flushing Hospital, is one of New York City's oldest hospitals. Since surviving a bankruptcy in 1999, it became affiliated with one and later another healthcare network. The hospital, which opened in 1884, marked the birth of its 5,000th baby in 1951. Flushing Hospital was identified in 1993 as a financially troubled unaffiliated community hospital. On that basis, the hospital joined Chosen Health Network, which was then described as 'a Brooklyn-based network of hospitals and health centers.' Flushing's nursing workforce was especially hit by financial problems in early 2012, after the hospital was identified in 2011 as one of six NYC hospitals in critical condition at the time it was part of the MediSys Health Network.
