Located in the northern region of the US state of Maryland, Frederick County has a population of more than 240,000, according to the 2010 census data. The county is included in the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV Metropolitan Statistical Area, and like the other outlying sections of the metropolitan area of Washington, the county has experienced rapid population growth in recent years. Bordering the southern border of Pennsylvania and the northeastern border of Virginia, the county is home to Catoctin Mountain Park, and the US army’s Fort Detrick. The county was created in 1748 by the Province of Maryland from the parts of Prince George’s County and Baltimore County.
