Furman University, established in 1826, is the oldest private university in South Carolina and among the seventy-five oldest establishments of higher schooling in operation, presently, at the national level. The college is named after Richard Furman, who was an important baptist clergyman during the early decades of the new state and an influential endorser of educational establishments throughout the US. He maintained lifelong ties to Rhode Island College (now Brown University), South Carolina College (now the University of South Carolina), Columbian College (now George Washington University), Furman, and Mercer University.
