Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) is a non-profit division of the Georgia Institute of Technology, focused on applied research on a diverse array of fields that include national defense and homeland security, public health systems, education, mobile, and wireless technologies industries. The facility began its operations in April 1934, as an Engineering Experiment Station, facilitated by 13 part-time faculty and a few graduate assistants, currently, the facility encompasses 892,000 square feet (82,900 m2) of laboratory and facility space, and operates a system of 7 facilities, headquartered on the Georgia Tech campus in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. It currently has over 2400 full-time employees, and other workforces made up of students, lecturers, and private agents, servicing clients that include United States Department of Defense agencies, non-defense federal agencies, the state of Georgia, and private industry.
