Summary:

TheFlorenceBascomGeoscience Center (FBGC) ofthe U.S.GeologicalSurveyconducts research designedto further the understanding ofgeologicprocesses andnatural resourcesof theUnitedStates.TheFBGCsupports awiderange ofscientific programsincluding theNational CooperativeGeologicMapping Program, theSpecialStudies Group, andtheUSGSSouthFlorida EcosystemRestoration andAbrupt Climate ChangeScience and Paleoclimate Projectsupportedbythe Climate andLandUse Mission area.

Responsibilities:

Akima is looking fors omeone to assist in research,development, analysis,interpretation, and synthesis ofgeomorphologic,geologic, andnaturalresource datasets in a digitalgeospatial data environment for the FBGCAppalachian BasinGeologic Mapping Project.TheGIS Specialist willbeexpected to develop andprocessdatasets; evaluate andcorrect datasets;developmaps(cartography) andgraphicalfigures tosupportgeographic andspatial analyses; and supportvariousgeospatialsoftware applicationsas wellas tosupportpublication &data release ofUSGSdataproducts and publications.

  • TheGISSpecialist willbecollaboratingwithUSGSscientists attheFBGC toconduct research anddevelop GIS applications and databases.Somefieldworkmaybeinvolved.

  • Strict attention to detailisrequired while atthe sametime,independentcreativity and progression withinthesefunctionsis also encouraged.

  • Assignments and taskswillbecommunicatedverbally and in writing.

  • The GIS Specialistisresponsibleforthecreation andmaintenanceofGISdatabases,interpretation ofremotely sensedimagery, and theproduction and analysis of digitalgeospatial datasets.

  • Approximately 50% oftimewillbespent on GIS analysisusing software packagesto:create, produce, and analyze data; develop andmaintain spatial databases;documentgeospatial databases withcompliant metadata;cartographicproduction ofmaps andgraphics; andprovide technical assistance to fellow teammemberswithGIS relatedissues.

  • The GIS Specialistshallwritetechnicalinstructions, reports,articles, and other publications relatingtocurrent projects.Thistaskis estimated tobe 30% - 40% of the GISSpecialists timecommitment.

  • Thistask requirestheindividualtosearch for, locate, andcollectinformation relatedto projectsusing sourcessuchas libraries,governmentpublications, technical manuals, and the Internet.

  • Theymaybe required toconvert these data fromhard-copyto digital datasets.

  • Datafromthesevarioussourcesis assembled,manipulated and analyzedasneeded.

  • The GIS Specialistmay assist with field work and fieldwork preparationactivities,includingthedevelopment ofbasemaps and datacollectionforms and the acquisition andprocessing ofGIS datatobeusedinthe field.

  • TheGIS Specialistmay alsoassist withdatacollectioninthefield utilizing GPStechniques and thepreparedbasemap anddatacollection forms.

  • Tr a v e l

  • The GISSpecialistshall travel asrequiredtosupport programtasks.The GIS Specialistmaybe required totravelinternationally,includingtravel toremote field locationswithin lessdevelopedcountries. GISSpecialistmustbe aUS Citizen, have avalidUSpassportorbe able to acquire avalidUS passport.

  • P hys i c a l D e m a n ds

  • Duties areusuallycompleted in an office environment.Fieldworkmay requirestrenuous activities, primarily lifting andcarrying of heavy field equipment,exposuretosun, heat,cold, andinsects.

  • Temperature andweatherextremesmaybe encounteredintheperformanceof the outdoor work, alongwith occasionalinsects, parasites, andvariablesanitaryconditionsof developingnations and regions.

Qualifications

`Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1 or more years experiencewith the ESRIArcGIS Desktopsuite andArcGISPro;required tobe able toconvert data andmaps fromGIS softwareformatsintographicdesignprogram formats andvice-versa.

  • Education and experiential knowledgeof the theories, principles, andmethods ofgeology andgeomorphology,includingbasicconcepts utilizedforgeologicmapping ofbedrockstructures andsurficialmaterials.

  • BS Degree.

  • You must be able to meet all health requirements, including but not limited to, current and future vaccination requirements for infectious diseases such as COVID-19.
