About Health Physicist

What does a Health Physicist do?

As Health Physicists, we are responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities and operations of a radiation safety program to ensure that everyone complies with local, state, and federal agencies' regulations as well as with the (NRC), the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety guidelines. We advise the university community on how to respect and follow the radiation safety protocols and procedures regarding radioactive material problems, shielding designs, waste handling procedures, dosimetry, and licensing requirements. We also evaluate, prepare and collect inventories related to the radioactive materials or hazardous chemicals for transport and disposal as required.

Core tasks:

  • respond to emergencies related to a leak of hazardous materials, radiation as well as fire and smoke within the facility
  • test and evaluate the sealed part of radioactive materials to search for any leaking
  • conduct regular research to determine appropriate university policies and procedures
