What does a Helicopter Mechanic do?

Helicopter mechanics are aircraft mechanics who specialize in the repair and maintenance of helicopters. We typically work in hangars, performing all facets of maintenance and repairs to ensure airworthiness. We are also responsible for ensuring that all technical aspects of the plane are documented properly. We are employed by the military, helicopter design and manufacturing companies, the air medical industry, government business organizations, and more.

Core tasks:

  • performing scheduled and unscheduled inspections, maintenance, and repair of systems and components as per acceptable methods, techniques, and practices
  • inspecting engine parts upon removal in accordance with appropriate maintenance manuals
  • assuring parts, products and materials that are installed meet regulatory requirements
  • decision making regarding maintenance, sequence, and techniques, troubleshooting, and discrepancy resolution
