Founded in 1990 and based in New York City, Housing Works is a non-profit organization aiming to tackle two of the most pressing issues: HIV/AIDS and homelessness. To achieve its goals the organization believes in ceaseless advocacy and campaigning, fostering entrepreneurial business activity, and providing life-changing services to its targeted group of people. The organization was formed when four members of an activist body ACT UP - Charles King, Keith Sylar, Virginia Shubert, and Eric Swayer - dedicated their efforts to serves scores of homeless people and families that were suffering from HIV/AIDS by providing them with an adequate shelter that they believed would prevent the proliferation of disease and allow those affected to live a happy and prosperous life. Aside from housing, the organization also renders services such as healthcare, Ready for Work (RFW) employment and skills development program, and also assist the communities with adequate legal services.
